Iranian Crypto Exchange Nobitex Loses $100M in Politically Motivated Cyberattack
Nobitex, an Iran-based cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed a $100 million breach by hacktivist group Gonjeshke Darande. The attackers, linked to Israel, claimed the exchange supported Iran's military and sanctions evasion. Funds were deliberately sent to unrecoverable wallets—a symbolic act rather than theft.
The incident triggered a nationwide crypto trading curfew in Iran. Initial loss estimates of $48 million were revised upward after Nobitex's disclosure. Blockchain analysts confirm the irreversible burning of stolen assets, with wallet addresses containing anti-IRGC messages.
